About Our Founder & Director

Dr. Malancha Sarkar, the director of Hitah Home Goods Pvt. Ltd., established the company with a clear vision: to create quality home goods that are gentle on the earth and the human body, while also providing jobs to economically disadvantaged women across the globe. Through her efforts, Hitah fully funds its community work via The Aroma Project, a philanthropic initiative aimed at empowering women, children and making a meaningful impact

Dr. Sarkar began her career as a researcher in Biology, before shifting her focus to vaccine development and cancer drug resistance. Her research journey took her to Japan and later to the United States, a country renowned for its advancements in modern science and innovation. After years of teaching at the University of Miami, Dr. Sarkar sought a career that was not only intellectually fulfilling but also soul-satisfying, leading to the creation of Hitah. The company’s factory is in Kanchipuram, an ancient temple town in Southern India, just 70 km from the bustling city of Chennai. At a village in Kanchipuram, Dr. Sarkar and her team have trained and employed local women, some of whom work as full-time staff at Hitah. The company’s mission extends beyond creating eco-friendly products; Dr. Sarkar is also dedicated to creating employment opportunities for economically disadvantaged women and women who need a second chance in life in the United States and across the globe, all while maintaining a strong commitment to sustainability. Thank you for visiting the Hitah website, and for being part of this impactful journey toward a better, more sustainable future!

“Dr. Sarkar thanks her husband, Dr. Subbarayan R Pochi, her children, Hitah team members and all of you for supporting this journey.”

About Us

Welcome to the world of Hitah where we craft natural and premium quality incense sticks and dhoop cones from upcycled flowers collected from and around the ancient temple town of Kanchipuram, India, that dates to 2nd century BCE.
The collected flowers are processed by our trained Village women to turn them into premium quality incense sticks. The sticks are then hand packed by the women into handmade sleeves before packing them into boxes. The flower-based sticks are infamous for frequently halting combustion halfway. Our incense sticks have undergone rigorous research and development to overcome this problem. They burn smoothly throughout the length of the stick.
Hitah is also crafting 100% natural beeswax floating candles and bars that are as close to the nature as possible. The wax candles burn for long and smooth without spluttering. The raw material is collected from the tribal communities who are known to mostly follow sustainable lifestyle. The beeswax is not chemically cleaned. Hitah prefers to use natural beeswax for their products than plant-based wax that is not only an extensively processed product but that takes away valuable land that can be used for food cultivation to alleviate hunger.
Hitah is committed to manufacture products that create jobs for the Village women and is human health friendly.

Significance of the name and the logo

The name Hitah (Sanskrit, pronounced Hetaha) means beneficial. Hitah’s intention is to develop products that are beneficial to humans, to the community and the planet. The color of the logo is dark brown, denoting mother earth, the red dot signifies feminine strength, passion and action. Women in India traditionally put a dot with Kum kum or sindoor in between their eyebrows.
The drawing on the left with dots and lines, is called Kolam. In Tamil Nadu India, there is a tradition of drawing simple to intricate designs with rice powder at the house entrance before the sun rises. The designs are almost always done by women irrespective of their financial or literacy status. The design does not have a start or an end point, denoting the universal force. These designs with dots and curves require creativity and concentration, that are aspects of femininity. Rice powder is used in this art to provide a source of food for insects and small animals, integrating an element of altruism in daily life. The Kolam art added to the logo is a tribute to those women who have kept the tradition alive.
